Residents Guide  |  Statement Of Purpose

'Many thanks to you all for taking such good care of me. I shall miss you all' (intermediate care)
Mrs H, Stevenage

'To all the staff at Bulwer Lytton House, on behalf of mum I want to say thank you for the care provided during the last few months of her life. During the last few visits we made, prior to mums passing, we could see that she was in good hands. All of you should be proud of the work you do'
Mr P, Stevenage

Built in the early 1980s in Knebworth, Bulwer Lytton House is a six-bungalow complex, providing residential care for 48 residents living with dementia and another eight intermediate care beds for patients discharged from Lister Hospital.

Set in mature enclosed gardens, we are just a 10-minute walk from a mainline train station, and the centre of the local village with a good variety of shops. Our quiet residential neighbourhood lends itself well to the needs of the residents, as there are some lovely walks nearby. Our catering staff provide a choice of nutritious meals and cater for special diets. We also prepare meals-on-wheels one day a week for local residents.

Bungalows 3, 5 and 6 have eight single rooms, and bungalow 2 has 7. Each room has a wash basin, telephone and TV socket, along with shared dining and sitting rooms. Communal televisions are provided in the lounges.

Bungalow 1 provides ‘intermediate’ care for up to eight people, which enables them to return home after their hospital stay or helps to prevent hospital re-admission. Bookings for this service are handled through intermediate care workers at Lister Hospital. We offer a Physiotherapist, Occupational Health Therapist and a dedicated Social Worker as part of this Intermediate Care package.

Bungalow 4 is a special care unit, providing 17 places for those requiring a higher level of care. The staffing ratio is higher to take account of the additional service required. All staff who work in this bungalow have received special training to meet the demands.

Residents are encouraged to bring items from their own homes, and we are able to accommodate small life companions such as birds. (Please see the section on valuables in the family area of this site).

We hold regular functions to which family and friends are invited. A C of E church service is held on the first Friday of each month, while a Catholic Priest attends every Friday.

The hairdresser visits the home each week and has the use of our fully equipped salon.

If you are interested in any of the services please feel free to ring the home directly. There is a Service Request form available to download in the ‘Families’ section of this site.

If you are specifically interested in short breaks, they are booked via Adult Care Services. Please speak to your social worker or phone the call centre on 01438 737400
