Vesta lodge in St Albans held a ceremony on Wednesday 19th May to celebrate the re-opening of their Best Friends Café. Mayor Chris Oxley kindly agreed to open the café, and cut a ribbon to mark the opening. After the ceremony, he joined residents, families and staff for tea and cakes. This was his last official duty as Mayor before handing over the chain of office to Councillor Maxine Crawley. A new extension has been built to re-house the Best Friends Café, which needed to be re-located due to the opening of the new Day Centre. As well as a beautifully furnished internal space, it also boasts two large patio areas, where residents, families and friends can enjoy their coffee and cakes in the sunshine. The Cafe is one of several now open in Quantum Care Homes, and is designed for residents and their families who may not otherwise be able to travel, to have tea, coffee and home made cakes in a real cafe environment. The cafes have been developed as part of the Quantum Care dementia training programmes which encourage staff to find ways of improving the well-being of people with dementia.
