Fosse House... Our 2 Events!

Sunday 1st February - National Dignity Action Day! This day was marked with a series of speciality training experiences aimed at carers and families. This included a full Dementia Simulator that mimics the effects of muscular atrophy, macular degeneration, arthritis and rheumatism, peripheral nervous atrophy and partial deafness, as well as Dementia itself using distraction to interfere with short-term memory. Staff who tried the simulator said that the ten minute experience “felt like an hour” and “it was good to do it, it really makes you appreciate what our residents experience every minute of every day.” Other experiences included the ‘Wheelchair Experience’… blindfolded participants experienced the sensation of being pushed around in a wheelchair both with and without communication from the pusher. In addition to this blindfolded participants experienced what it is like to require assistance with meals, first with a task focused then a person centred approach. The last experience, ‘Are you there?’ let participants experience the profound sensory deprivation and helplessness of being alone, versus the elation of being with people who take a genuine interest.
