Choosing the right care home for a loved one can be a difficult decision, but with careful, research you can find a place that provides the right care and environment.

The first thing to consider is the kind of care that’s needed. It’s also wise at this point to think about the kind of care that might be needed in the future too, particularly if you’re looking for care for someone living with a condition that is likely to deteriorate over time.

Generally speaking there are four main types of care offered by care homes. The first is Residential Care. This is suitable for older people who are either not living with dementia or are in the early stages. Residential care homes provide care, community and support for those who need help with day-to-day living.

The next type of care on offer is Dementia Care. This is much like the residential option but the care is provided by staff with specialist dementia care training. The home itself may also have features that help those living with dementia. Usually a home that provides Dementia Care will also provide Residential Care.

Then there’s Nursing Care which is best suited to those who are living with one or more conditions that require care provided by qualified nursing staff.

Finally, there’s Respite Care which is a short stay in a care home lasting from a few days to a few weeks. This type of care is often used when those currently caring for an individual need to take time off. It’s also a good option for those wanting to try a care home for a short while to see if it’s the right choice.

The next thing to check is that any home you are considering has a track record of providing quality care. Every home is assessed by the Care Quality Commission and has a report available on the CQC website that will tell you about the standards of care in the home.

Local reputation is another aid in the selection process. You may be aware of a number of homes in your local area and you may already have heard a little about them. You can also find out what other people think about them by looking at online reviews or speaking to past relatives.

The research we’ve done at Quantum Care has found that location is a key factor when deciding on a care home. Visiting a loved one on a regular basis can be inconvenient if their home is difficult to get to. Many families and friends of care home residents also enjoy getting involved with the homes, for instance by taking part in events and activities such as garden parties and dinner clubs, so that’s another reason why being close to the home may be important.

Make sure that you satisfy yourself that the home has a well thought out and busy activities schedule. These should be published within the home on a display board or a wall so it should not be hard to find. If it’s not there, ask to see a copy.

Mealtimes are really important, not just for health, but also for wellbeing. Check that there are a range of food options available, that dietary requirements can be met, and make sure that you view the dining rooms. It’s also worthwhile checking that the home has its own onsite chef; they will be able to tailor the meals they prepare for different requirements and preferences.

Make sure that you visit the home in person. There’s an emotional aspect to the choice that is hard to define but particularly important. Visiting the home, taking a tour and chatting to the staff is a great way to get a feel for that all important “atmosphere”. You’ll know it when you feel it and it’s something we work very hard on in our own care homes because we know how important it is. Check also that the home includes welcoming social spaces, such as cafes, where you can sit and chat with your loved one over refreshments.
